Peter S. O’Neill is the founder of O’Neill Enterprises LLC. Currently, in his chosen role as chief advisor for strategic planning, Pete is active in identifying potential land acquisition opportunities and providing experienced insight into the viability of potential O’Neill Enterprises projects. Pete’s role as advisor and “visionary” is central to the O’Neill Enterprises business plan.
O’Neill was born and raised in Chappaqua, New York, received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Dartmouth College in 1959. His first job was as a sales engineer for ALCOA, from 1959 - 1963. He then attended the Stanford University Business School and, upon graduation in 1965, joined Boise Cascade Corporation in Boise, Idaho.
After holding several management positions within Boise Cascade, and rising to senior vice president, O’Neill resigned in 1976 to pursue entrepreneurial ventures. The first of these was the co-founding of the Sandpiper Restaurant in Boise. O’Neill and his partners built the Sandpiper into a chain of five restaurants in Idaho and Oregon, and sold the business in 1985.
In 1979, O’Neill started River Run Development Company, the predecessor of OE LLC. The venture developed River Run, a 120-acre planned residential community along the Boise River. River Run received the coveted Urban Land Institute Award for Excellence in 1990.
Other OE LLC residential communities include Spring Meadow, The Springs, Meadow Creek and Surprise Valley in Boise, Idaho; Lane Ranch in Sun Valley, Idaho; Spring Mountain Ranch in McCall, Idaho; Woodbridge in Meridian, Idaho and most recently Bown Crossing, a mixed-use community in Southeast Boise.
Throughout his career in Boise, O’Neill has been active in community affairs, having served on the Board of Directors and the Executive Committees for a number of community entities, including Fundsy, The Greater Boise Area Chamber of Commerce, the Boise Metro Economic Development Council, The Children’s Home/Warm Springs Center, the Boise Futures Foundation, Bogus Basin, Bogus Basin Ski Racing Alliance, etc.
O’Neill’s turn in the public sector barrel was as Chairman and Co-Chairman of the Boise Redevelopment Agency in the mid-1980's. It was during this period of time that the planning, financing and the re-birth of the heart of our Capital City took place.
O’Neill serves on the Board of Trustees of Albertson College of Idaho (past Chairman of the Board) and has recently finished nine years as a Trustee and member of The Nature Conservancy of Idaho. He serves on the steering committee of Blueprint for Good Growth and is Chairman of the Treasure Valley Air Quality Council. Additionally, O’Neill also serves on the Board of Directors of IdaCorp and Idaho Power Co. and Building Materials Holding Corporation.
Professionally, O’Neill has served on the policy advisory board for the National Association of Homebuilders and on the Harvard-MIT Joint Center for Urban Studies. He is an active member of the Urban Land Institute.
Personally, O’Neill lives in River Run with his wife, Barrie, a professional interior designer. O’Neill has four grown children, all of whom are married – three living in Boise with their spouses and seven collective grandchildren. Non-work passions include fly fishing and skiing.
